Harry Potter and the Why Bother

by fkerrigan @ 13. Jul 2007 - 08:43:27

Saw the lastest film last night "Order of the pheonix" and its poor, don't get me wrong the acting is good, visual effects are very good, but if falls down on the story. The plot is rubbish and my 12 year old couldn't follow the plot which is not suprising as there isn't one. My 10 year old boy did not care as there was enough visual effects to keep him interested. Neither would go and see it again.

Will I buy the DVD, eh.... no, but my wife will anyway.

I agree. I wasn't impressed with the film at all. There was a lot missing from the story line - which isn't surprising considering they had to cut it down from a 800-odd page book. The bits that were there didn't fit and there were references about things that happened previously (but were cut or never filmed) or left loose. Perhaps the DVD version will make more sense if they re-insert the deleted scenes.

I also felt that the two pivotal things in the story were not done justice at all.

First the Dolores Umbridge plot element: The exit of the Weasley twins did not show the elation of the school at umbridge getting her comeuppance. Also it was never revealed in the film that it was Umbridge who originally set the dementors on Harry. To me this is important as one of the themes of the film was that there is not black and white when it comes to good versus evil. There are many shades of grey. Umbridge's deeply held belief was that she was doing good while in fact she was almost as evil as Voldemort. At least Voldemort acknowledges that he is evil. It is a much more dangerous person who does not.

Second was the fight scene at the end. My main complaint about this was that there was so much cut from the book and second that the climax of the scene was just too overdone. What I mean by that is that Voldemort manages to smash the entire atrium in one spell practically yet can't get at Dumbledore or Harry properly. In the book the atrium is smashed up gradually as the fight progresses. For a scene that, apparently, took a quarter of the film's budget I was very disappointed.
